Agger Takes Over From Fellow Ex-Red in New National Team Position

Daniel Agger, a standout defender during his time at Liverpool, has embarked on a new chapter in his managerial career by stepping into an international coaching role. This new position sees him taking over from a former Liverpool colleague.

Agger, whose promising career at Anfield was often hampered by injuries, retired from playing in 2016. After some time away from football, he began his managerial journey with HB Koge in Denmark’s second tier. He led the team until 2023 when he left the club by mutual agreement. Now, at 39, Agger has been appointed as Denmark’s assistant coach. He will work under Morten Wieghorst, the interim manager and former Celtic midfielder.

Agger’s current contract covers Denmark’s next six Nations League matches. By accepting this role, he replaces his former Liverpool teammate Christian Poulsen, who stepped down after three years as an assistant coach, citing personal reasons.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the role, Agger, a former captain of Denmark, said, “I’ve missed being part of the national team and I’m excited to get started. I’m here to make a difference and contribute to the team with my experience and skills.”

Denmark faces a challenging Nations League group stage, competing against European champions Spain, as well as Switzerland and Serbia.

Agger has maintained ties with Liverpool, participating in Liverpool Legends matches, including the recent game against Ajax in March.
