Alisson’s Injury Update: Liverpool Fixtures He Is Likely to Miss

Alisson Becker is set to miss at least six weeks due to a recurring hamstring injury, sidelining him for seven key matches across various competitions.

This is the third time in 2024, and the second time this season, that Liverpool’s No. 1 has been hampered by a hamstring problem, and his return could be delayed beyond the current timeline depending on his recovery.

Liverpool will have to navigate a challenging period without their star goalkeeper, with significant fixtures ahead. These include a Premier League clash with Chelsea on October 20, followed by a trip to Leipzig for a Champions League group stage match on October 23. Other important matches include Arsenal away on October 27, Brighton in the League Cup and Premier League, and a home Champions League game against Bayer Leverkusen before concluding the stretch with Aston Villa on November 9.

Caoimhin Kelleher, Liverpool’s backup goalkeeper, will be called upon to step up during Alisson’s absence. While Kelleher has proven himself a reliable option, Alisson’s quality and experience make him irreplaceable for such a demanding set of fixtures, which could determine Liverpool’s trajectory in both domestic and European competitions.

If all goes well with Alisson’s rehabilitation, he could return for Liverpool’s Premier League match against Southampton on November 24. However, with a history of hamstring injuries, the club is likely to exercise caution to prevent any further setbacks. His absence could become even more concerning as Liverpool are due to face Real Madrid and Manchester City shortly after his expected return, both of which are crucial games.

Alisson’s injury history is a cause for concern, as this latest setback brings his total missed matches for Liverpool over the last five seasons to 49—the highest among Premier League goalkeepers. Although Kelleher is a capable replacement, Alisson’s absence during such a pivotal stretch of the season leaves Liverpool in a difficult position as they look to solidify their standing in both the Premier League and Champions League.
