Liverpool had a relatively quiet summer transfer window, securing just two signings: goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili and winger Federico Chiesa.
Throughout the summer, they were heavily linked with Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, but the transfer ultimately fell through after the player opted to remain with his boyhood club. This decision came as a surprise, given earlier reports suggesting that Zubimendi had given his approval for the move.
According to Estadio Deportivo, the midfielder, who was part of Spain’s Euro 2024-winning squad, now appears keen to revive the transfer and is eager for Liverpool to approach him again in the January window. Zubimendi is reportedly drawn to the prospect of joining Arne Slot’s project at Anfield, despite turning down the opportunity just months ago.
Liverpool’s strong start to the season may have influenced the midfielder’s change of heart. The team, under Slot, has won three of their four Premier League matches so far, and they kicked off their Champions League campaign with a solid 3-1 victory over AC Milan. However, the Reds did suffer a setback with a home defeat to Nottingham Forest, their only league loss to date.
Slot had been targeting a new number 6 to bolster his midfield over the summer, and Zubimendi was seen as a prime candidate. However, despite widespread speculation, the player chose to stay in La Liga, leaving both fans and the media puzzled.
Now, Zubimendi is reportedly reconsidering his decision, possibly regretting not joining Liverpool as Real Sociedad struggles in La Liga. The Basque side currently sits 16th in the league, having collected only four points from their opening six matches.
While the midfielder may now be eager to join the Merseyside club, it remains unclear whether Liverpool will renew their interest in him when the January window opens. Zubimendi could well be reflecting on his summer decision, wondering if passing up the opportunity to play at Anfield was a mistake.
