Arne Slot’s appointment has sparked much discussion about how Liverpool’s tactics will evolve under his guidance.
Slot addressed these topics, along with some light-hearted humor, during his first press conference on Friday.
Meeting the Merseyside media for the first time, Slot fielded questions about succeeding Jurgen Klopp, making new appointments, getting acclimated to the city, and working with the players. He was also asked about his tactical approach, noting that while he utilized a 4-2-3-1 formation at Feyenoord, Liverpool traditionally played a 4-3-3 under Klopp.
Slot’s response delved into his broader philosophy, emphasizing flexibility and adaptability both on and off the ball. He explained, “I hope when people watch my team, they don’t just see a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 or any specific formation. Sometimes we play 4-2-3-1, sometimes 4-1-4-1, and other times we build up with three at the back. There’s a lot of freedom with the ball.”
However, Slot stressed a different approach when out of possession: “When we don’t have the ball, there’s not as much freedom. We want to be aggressive and maintain our positions. I wouldn’t say I prefer a specific formation like 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. Players take up various positions based on the situation.”
Slot then humorously addressed the misconception about his formation at Feyenoord: “If you asked me, I’d say we played 4-3-3 instead of 4-2-3-1. We often built up with three at the back and had different roles for the full-backs. I’m curious who told you we played 4-2-3-1. Maybe they should get their [coaching] license or analyze a bit better!” he joked, revealing his willingness to mix humor with serious insight.
This glimpse into Slot’s character and tactical mindset hints at an exciting evolution for Liverpool’s playstyle. Fans will get their first real look at these changes during the pre-season friendly against Real Betis on July 26, the first of three games on their United States tour.
