Arne Slot has already spoken about the perils of managerial burnout even before being officially announced as Jurgen Klopp’s successor at Liverpool. Slot is set to leave Feyenoord and join Liverpool at the end of the season, as Klopp steps down for a break after nine demanding years at Anfield. Klopp, who revealed his plans to depart in January, cited exhaustion as his reason for leaving.
Klopp’s reason isn’t unprecedented; Pep Guardiola took a year-long sabbatical between his stints at Barcelona and Bayern Munich. “I think that almost every manager of a top club is on the verge of burnout. Being a head coach is an incredibly tough job,” Slot told Dutch publication Algemeen Dagblad. “Especially at a top club where you’re constantly under scrutiny. I experienced this last season at Feyenoord, which was very challenging.”
Slot emphasized that he doesn’t expect Liverpool to be more demanding than his current role at Feyenoord. “That would have been the case even if I had stayed at Feyenoord,” he noted. “Expectations at De Kuip are also high. People demand good football and positive results. That has often been successful, but as a coach, you’re always working towards that.”
Slot has been candid about his upcoming move to Liverpool, marking his first international career shift. Last Friday, he mentioned that an official announcement was “a matter of days” away. “It takes more than a simple shopping list and going to the store,” he explained. “These kinds of things need to be timed correctly. It hasn’t been communicated yet, but rest assured, it will happen soon.”
Feyenoord will face Excelsior at De Kuip on Sunday, Slot’s final game in charge. Simultaneously, Klopp will lead Liverpool one last time against Wolves on the Premier League’s final day of the 2023/24 season.
