Arne Slot reveals his lack of enthusiasm over Liverpool’s showing in Bologna clash.

Arne Slot remained candid after Liverpool’s 2-0 Champions League victory over Bologna, acknowledging there was plenty of room for improvement. While Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah secured the win with their goals, Slot emphasized that the performance wasn’t entirely satisfying.

In his first Champions League match at Anfield, Slot’s side only controlled 52 percent of possession, with Bologna taking more shots on goal (12-9). Despite being heavy favorites, Liverpool created just one big chance, the same as their Italian opponents.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Slot made it clear that although the result was positive, he wasn’t particularly “delighted” with the overall display. “Apart from the two goals, there weren’t many things I’d say I was ‘delighted’ with,” Slot admitted. He praised the second goal in particular, highlighting Diogo Jota’s clever movement and the excellent interplay between Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold in the buildup.

Slot acknowledged the difficulty of playing against Bologna’s aggressive man-marking system, comparing it to Liverpool’s previous experience with Atalanta. “It’s tough when they take so many risks and constantly press you,” he said, noting that Liverpool’s pressing improved in the second half.

The coach felt the team could have done better with their final passes, and at times, heads dropped too quickly after losing possession. He noted that when players didn’t immediately press after losing the ball, they gave Bologna too much control.

Slot also pointed out how heavily involved his goalkeeper was, a rarity in recent matches, due to Bologna’s relentless pressing. However, he was pleased with the team’s improved ball retention after halftime.

One notable change was Darwin Nunez being substituted for Diogo Jota, who played a crucial role in Salah’s goal. Slot highlighted the contributions of Ryan Gravenberch, along with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté, particularly their determination to maintain a clean sheet. He emphasized that this mentality is key to success.

While the result was important, Slot clearly expects more from his players moving forward, especially in terms of intensity and decision-making in the final third.
