Arne Slot Reveals Reasons Behind Liverpool’s Hiring of Former Man City and Wolfsburg Coach

Liverpool has appointed Aaron Briggs as their new first-team individual development coach. This announcement follows his departure from his role as assistant coach at Wolfsburg in March. Briggs, who is 37 years old, brings with him a wealth of experience, having started his career as a performance analyst at Blackpool in 2007.

Briggs’ varied and impressive resume includes roles at Blackpool and Preston before he joined Manchester City in 2011. During his nine years at City, he held five different analysis positions, eventually becoming the senior first-team performance analyst. He later spent two years coaching at Monaco and then joined Niko Kovac’s staff at Wolfsburg as an assistant coach.

Liverpool’s head coach, Arne Slot, spoke to LFCTV about Briggs’ new role. Slot explained that Briggs will act as a bridge between the youth academy and the first team, focusing on players transitioning from the U21s to the senior squad. Briggs’ duties will include conducting one-on-one meetings with players, assisting in training sessions, and contributing his analytical expertise.

Briggs’ appointment comes as he replaces Vitor Matos, who, along with Pepijn Lijnders before him, played a crucial role in linking the academy with the first team during Jurgen Klopp’s tenure. Matos and Lijnders are now both working at Red Bull Salzburg. Recognizing the importance of this role, Liverpool has ensured a seamless transition by bringing in Briggs.

With a UEFA Pro Licence, Briggs has already been active in pre-season sessions at the AXA Training Centre. His coaching and analytical skills make him a versatile addition to the backroom staff. This is particularly important as Liverpool also lost key analyst Peter Krawietz this summer. Briggs’ hybrid role reflects the adaptable nature of Slot’s new-look backroom team.
