Liverpool are facing a significant decision over the future of center-back Sepp van den Berg, with a substantial number of clubs expressing interest in signing him this summer.
Throughout pre-season, Van den Berg played a vital role under head coach Arne Slot. However, upon Ibrahima Konaté’s return, the 22-year-old found himself dropped from the starting lineup, indicating that he may not be in contention for regular playing time this season. He now faces stiff competition from Konaté, Virgil van Dijk, Jarell Quansah, and Joe Gomez.
Despite the uncertainty about his role, there is no clear indication yet on whether Van den Berg will push for a move away. Slot has yet to finalize his squad plans for the upcoming campaign. If the Dutch defender does decide to leave, he won’t be short of options, with at least 11 clubs reportedly interested in securing his services.
Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany provided an update from the Bundesliga, noting that Stuttgart, Hoffenheim, Mainz, Wolfsburg, Bayer Leverkusen, and Borussia Mönchengladbach are all keen on Van den Berg. Meanwhile, Dutch publication Voetbal International has reported fresh interest from the Netherlands, with Feyenoord joining PSV Eindhoven in the pursuit of the Netherlands U21 international. Feyenoord, Slot’s former club, has reportedly been tracking Van den Berg “for a long time” and now considers him a “top priority” as they look to bolster their defence. This comes amid speculation that Lutsharel Geertruida, previously linked with Liverpool, could be heading to Aston Villa.
In addition to the interest from Germany and the Netherlands, Premier League clubs Southampton and Brentford, along with Serie A’s Bologna, are also said to be interested in signing Van den Berg.
The player’s price tag varies across reports. Sources in his home country suggest he could be available for around €20 million (£17.1 million), while German reports estimate his value to be between £20 million and £25 million. His strong performances in pre-season and the high level of interest will likely strengthen Liverpool’s position in any negotiations.
Despite his impact during the pre-season friendlies and his ability to impress Slot, it seems probable that the £4.4 million signing from PEC Zwolle will depart this summer. However, where Van den Berg will end up remains uncertain, as Liverpool has already turned down offers from PSV, Mainz, and Wolfsburg.
