Despite Liverpool declining an offer to sign Anthony Gordon before the Premier League’s PSR deadline, Newcastle United are concerned that the winger might be swayed. It was reported on Saturday that Newcastle, eager to meet spending limits, proposed selling Gordon to Liverpool.
However, discussions fell apart when Newcastle insisted on including Jarell Quansah in the deal, a condition Liverpool rejected, unwilling to part with their promising centre-back.
Liverpool turned down the Gordon deal because of the Quansah stipulation, though they maintain a long-term interest in the player. Despite having ample depth on the left flank, Liverpool may revisit their interest in Gordon, especially if Luis Diaz’s future, amid interest from Barcelona, becomes uncertain.
Chris Waugh of The Athletic revealed that Newcastle’s offer was made out of necessity as they sought ways to balance their finances. Waugh noted internal concerns that Gordon might be enticed by a move to Merseyside.
Liverpool’s prior enquiry about Gordon indicates an ongoing interest. Given Gordon’s background as a Liverpool supporter who was once part of their youth setup, it wouldn’t be surprising if he wanted the move.
Whether Liverpool will pursue this transfer this summer is uncertain. They currently have sufficient options for the left-wing position, including Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota, and Darwin Nunez. However, if Diaz leaves, Liverpool might need to strengthen that area.
Waugh also mentioned that Liverpool had previously made a tentative enquiry about Gordon’s availability, hinting at potential plans to revamp their left side.
Crossing the Liverpool-Everton divide has become less controversial, as seen with Conor Coady and Rafa Benitez. At 23, homegrown, and passionate about Liverpool, Gordon, who scored 11 goals and provided 10 assists in 35 league games last season, would be a valuable acquisition.
Newcastle’s decision to offer Gordon publicly indicates that he is not untouchable in the transfer market. This could lead Gordon to reconsider his future, especially with a potential return to Merseyside on the horizon. This situation warrants close attention in the coming months.
