Despite Luis Diaz’s declaration that he is “very happy” at Liverpool, rumors about a potential move to Barcelona persist in both Spanish and Colombian media.
Speaking to Gol Caracol earlier this month, Diaz expressed his contentment at Liverpool, stating, “I am very happy there in Liverpool, it is a great team and club. I always wanted to play there, so I am very happy and calm. I’m not thinking about anything else, I’m thinking about the Colombian national team, which is where we are.”
Diaz, whose contract with Liverpool extends until 2027, emphasized that his current focus is on preparing for the Copa America, with plans to return to Liverpool afterward.
However, interest from Barcelona remains strong, as The Athletic confirmed in a recent update. Colombian journalist Breinner Arteta Canizares went further, claiming that a meeting is set to take place between Diaz’s representatives and “emissaries from a Spanish club” in the United States either “this week or next.” According to Canizares, the 27-year-old “would have everything lined up to leave Liverpool FC and go to LaLiga.”
In Spain, Sport’s Joaquim Piera reported that Barcelona has identified Diaz and Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes as their top targets to strengthen two key positions. Piera suggested that the ongoing European Championship and the upcoming Copa America, which starts on Friday, will make for a “very long and absolutely unpredictable” transfer window.
Merseyside journalist Andy Jones added that Liverpool “would expect a significant fee for the Colombian winger to even consider a sale.” With three years remaining on Diaz’s current deal, the club aims to secure a substantial profit on the £50 million they spent to acquire him in January 2022.
While expecting a profit on the £50 million investment might be ambitious given Barcelona’s well-documented financial struggles, the Spanish club has nonetheless managed significant expenditures in recent seasons. Notable signings include Ferran Torres (£47m), Raphinha (£55m), Jules Kounde (£42m), Robert Lewandowski (£43m), and 19-year-old Vitor Roque (£52m).
