On a memorable Tuesday night, Conor Bradley shone brightly for Northern Ireland, netting both goals in their 2-0 triumph over Andorra in an international friendly. The Liverpool right-back, often positioned deeper on the pitch, found himself in more advanced roles, scoring from areas not typically associated with his defensive position.
Bradley’s first goal was particularly impressive, as he deftly maneuvered past his marker to finish in front of the left post. After the match, he shared insights into his dynamic role under manager Michael O’Neill with reporters, including Steven Beacom of the Belfast Telegraph.
“Michael doesn’t just let me roam freely, but he encourages me to play with freedom and adapt to the flow of the game,” said the 20-year-old. “I love playing like that, picking up positions both inside and out wide, depending on how the game evolves. It’s working well at the moment.”
Under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, Bradley was also encouraged to advance, but rarely did he venture into the opposition’s six-yard box, where he scored both goals on this occasion in Murcia. Reflecting on his performance, Bradley added: “For the first goal, I anticipated the ball coming across the front post, got to the cross, and tucked it away. The second goal was a bit fortunate, but I had a similar feeling it would come my way.”
Bradley was understandably elated: “My first goal against Scotland was special, and getting two in one night against Andorra feels amazing. I’m buzzing and really happy.”
As Bradley enjoys his success on the international stage, Liverpool and their manager Arne Slot will be keeping a close watch, hoping he remains fit for the pre-season. O’Neill was mindful of this and substituted Bradley, despite the young star being on the cusp of a hat-trick.
“Michael wanted to keep me on but couldn’t risk sending me back to Liverpool injured, so he took me off,” Bradley explained. “I’m happy with the two goals. Maybe a hat-trick will come another time. It’s been a fantastic season, and now I’m looking forward to a short break.”
Bradley is set to begin pre-season training in the first week of July, with Liverpool’s initial friendly scheduled for July 27 at 12:30 am (BST) against Real Betis in Pittsburgh, USA. As he anticipates this next chapter, Bradley’s recent performances promise a bright future ahead.
