Julian Ward, the former sporting director of Liverpool who succeeded Michael Edwards before departing in 2023, has returned to the fold as the technical director for Fenway Sports Group (FSG). This marks another significant move in the restructuring of Liverpool’s off-field operations following Edwards’ promotion to CEO of football.

Ward, who previously served as Edwards’ assistant and then as sporting director, has now assumed the role of technical director within FSG. His reappointment was widely reported by the Merseyside press, alongside the announcement of Pedro Marques, currently with Benfica, as the director of football development.

While neither Ward nor Marques will directly work for Liverpool, their responsibilities will inevitably intersect with the club’s plans. Ward’s comeback follows his departure from Liverpool’s sporting director position after just a year, during which he was instrumental in securing key signings such as Alexis Mac Allister, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Cody Gakpo. His network also facilitated deals for players like Diogo Jota, Fabinho, and Mohamed Salah’s contract extension in 2022.

Ward and Marques will officially join FSG on June 1, with a focus on expanding the group’s portfolio through the acquisition of another club, a venture in which Marques is expected to play a significant role. Concurrently, Liverpool has appointed Richard Hughes as their new sporting director, supported by David Woodfine, who returns to the club having previously overseen loan management.

The final piece of the puzzle is the anticipated announcement of Feyenoord’s Arne Slot as Liverpool’s new head coach at the conclusion of the current season.
