Fabrizio Romano recently reported that Anthony Gordon was thrilled about the possibility of joining Liverpool this summer. However, the Merseyside club couldn’t proceed with official talks due to pricing issues and complications around a potential swap deal.
Romano explained to The Daily Briefing that while Liverpool and Newcastle discussed the idea, it never progressed far. “The deal was never really close,” Romano said. “They talked about it, but Liverpool found the price tag too high. A swap deal was also challenging because Liverpool didn’t want to lose key players. So, it was an idea, a conversation, but nothing concrete.”
Gordon was enthusiastic about joining Liverpool, but negotiations between the clubs didn’t get serious, much like Alexander Isak’s situation with Chelsea. Newcastle might have considered the deal if Liverpool had been willing to part with Jarell Quansah, a talented 21-year-old center-back. Liverpool, however, had no intention of letting him go.
While Gordon has expressed interest in a move to Merseyside, he isn’t likely to create conflict at Newcastle to force a transfer. Newcastle’s management might need to rethink their strategy, especially since they no longer need to sell players to meet their PSR requirements. This reduced pressure means Gordon might stay in the North East, where he’s popular and playing well under Eddie Howe.
Despite Gordon’s clear interest in Liverpool, it seems he’ll continue to thrive at Newcastle for now.
