Liverpool’s attempts to speed up their transfer activity this summer have faced a setback. Club CEO Billy Hogan has reaffirmed Liverpool’s commitment to the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR), suggesting that these regulations may be contributing to the club’s quiet transfer window so far.
Since new manager Arne Slot took over from Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, Liverpool has not made any senior signings. This lack of activity might be frustrating for fans, especially as Liverpool remains the only club in Europe’s top five leagues without a new addition. Hogan explained to The Independent the importance of adhering to financial regulations, stating, “The rules must be enforced. If clubs violate them, the Premier League has a process to address that. We support these rules and the principle of financial sustainability. Clubs should be run responsibly and not incur losses.”
He added, “We are in favor of the new financial regulations and are working through the transition from PSR to the squad-cost rule, which will take effect after this season. Our league is the most competitive and global, and maintaining that status is essential.”
Liverpool’s owners, FSG, have consistently supported the PSR, and this stance was further highlighted when their rumoured acquisition of French club Girondins de Bordeaux fell through, leading to the club’s bankruptcy. Domestically, Liverpool’s rivals Everton, Nottingham Forest, and Leicester City all faced sanctions last season for failing to comply with Premier League financial rules.
Despite Hogan’s comments, Liverpool has been active behind the scenes in the transfer market. Newcastle United’s dynamic winger Anthony Gordon has been linked with a move to Anfield, while defender Joe Gomez might be heading in the opposite direction. Strengthening the midfield, particularly with a defensive midfielder, is a priority for the club. Additionally, Liverpool is reportedly targeting a central defender, although their interest in Lenny Yoro appears to have been thwarted by his move to Manchester United. Contract renewals for key players like Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who have yet to return for pre-season after their Euro campaign, are also on the agenda.
On the pitch, Liverpool has shown promise under Slot, who has introduced new tactics that have been well-received by the fans. His handling of the media has also been impressive. A pre-season victory over likely Premier League contenders Arsenal has marked a positive start to the Dutch manager’s tenure at Liverpool.
