FSG Takes Charge of New Club Prior to £67.6 Million Acquisition

FSG Eyes Takeover of Bordeaux Amid Financial Turmoil

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), known for owning Liverpool FC, is in the process of finalizing a takeover of French club Bordeaux. Despite the deal not being complete, FSG is already influencing key transfer decisions for the Ligue 2 side.

The Proposed Deal

FSG plans to invest €42 million (£36.1m) as part of their multi-club model venture. This financial injection is crucial for Bordeaux, who are struggling with financial issues and facing demotion to the French third tier. The total takeover value is projected at £67.6 million, which is relatively modest for acquiring a majority stake in a football club.

Current Status and Future Plans

FSG has confirmed their interest, but they describe the process as being in the “early stages of dialogue and engagement.” A decision is needed within the next week-and-a-half as Bordeaux appeals their sanctions from French financial authorities.

Influence on Club Decisions

French publication L’Equipe reports that while the sale is not guaranteed, FSG officials are already very influential at Bordeaux. This includes transfer decisions, like a permanent deal for loanee Gaetan Weissbeck, and contract negotiations, such as potentially renewing Vital Nsimba’s expired terms. FSG’s primary contact in these matters is deputy general director Thomas Jacquemier, who is advocating strongly for the sale.

Complications and Assurances

An agreement with current owner Gerard Lopez remains complicated. It’s suggested that FSG might provide an initial loan of €42 million to prevent demotion, with a promise to buy the club later. However, Lopez seeks further assurances, including compensation if Bordeaux is promoted back to Ligue 1 or qualifies for European competition.

Potential Rivalry and Future Prospects

Lopez might also invest more of his own money into Bordeaux, positioning himself as a potential rival to FSG in any deal. Despite these complications, it seems likely that Bordeaux will eventually join the FSG umbrella, with significant plans already in place to advance the French side.

Overall, FSG’s involvement shows their commitment to purchasing Bordeaux, aiming to stabilize and elevate the club in the competitive landscape of French football.
