Former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard was dismissed from his managerial role at Aston Villa in October 2022. At the time, Villa had only secured two league victories and were dangerously close to the relegation zone. Gerrard’s departure paved the way for Unai Emery’s appointment, which subsequently led to the team securing Champions League qualification.

Reflecting on his dismissal, Gerrard described the experience as “tough” and revealed he sought advice from others, including former rival manager Sir Alex Ferguson. In an interview with the Telegraph, Gerrard shared insights from their conversation.

He explained, “I’m not someone who blames others or points fingers. It’s not my nature. The experience was hard, and it did affect my confidence. I needed time to process it and spoke to many managers. Alex Ferguson advised me to take my time, not rush into anything, and to carefully analyze the situation.”

Gerrard emphasized that despite the setback, his ambition remained intact. “I didn’t have specific targets when I started this journey. I didn’t plan to join Glasgow Rangers or move to the Premier League after a few years. Aston Villa wasn’t on my resume either. I’m passionate about coaching and aim to be the best version of myself.”

He added, “[The sacking] was tough. It hurt and I felt it deeply. But it’s important for people to understand that if I didn’t feel that way or take full responsibility, I wouldn’t be true to myself. When it comes to football, something I love deeply, I always own my experiences.”

In the summer of 2023, Gerrard took on the role of head coach at Al Ettifaq and led the club to a sixth-place finish in the Saudi Pro League in his first season.
