Gomez Weighs Departure from Liverpool After £45m Move Collapses

Joe Gomez might leave Liverpool this summer after a £45 million move to Newcastle collapsed during negotiations over Anthony Gordon.

Before the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) deadline at the end of June, Liverpool and Newcastle were in discussions. Newcastle, aiming to avoid sanctions, proposed a deal involving Gordon, a lifelong Liverpool fan. The offer included Gordon moving to Liverpool for £75 million, while Gomez would transfer to Newcastle for £45 million.

According to Ian Doyle from the Liverpool Echo, the deal was “agreed in principle.” However, Newcastle pulled out after successfully selling fringe players Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh.

Now, Gomez faces a decision about his future at Anfield, with increasing interest from other clubs. While Liverpool haven’t received an official bid for Gomez, he is aware of last month’s talks with Newcastle and is attracting significant attention.

Simon Jones from the Mail reports that Gomez is “open for a new challenge,” appreciating the opportunity for regular first-team football at St James’ Park. Although it’s uncertain if the situation will progress, Gomez’s desire for guaranteed game time is understandable.

Gomez has dropped in the pecking order at Liverpool, behind Jarell Quansah and Ibrahima Konate, who partners Virgil van Dijk. Sepp van den Berg has returned for pre-season and could stay at the club despite Liverpool rejecting offers from Mainz, Wolfsburg, and PSV Eindhoven.

If Gomez leaves, the 22-year-old van den Berg could be his immediate replacement, with Liverpool likely allowing only one of them to depart.
