Jurgen Klopp ‘turned down a fortune’ in show of class to former club Dortmund
Jurgen Klopp, former Liverpool manager, showed his unwavering support for his old club, Borussia Dortmund, by attending their Champions League final against Real Madrid at Wembley. Despite being offered lucrative deals to work as a TV pundit for the event, Klopp chose to stand by his former team.
Making his first public appearance since leaving Liverpool, Klopp was warmly welcomed by Dortmund fans and joined in singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” before the match. His decision to attend as a fan rather than take up lucrative offers was revealed by LFCTV commentator and UEFA media advisor John Bradley, who shared the story on Twitter.
Bradley noted that Klopp had been invited to join UEFA’s ‘VVIPs’ for the evening but opted for a box seat behind the fans with his family. Klopp’s reasoning was heartfelt: “Edin Terzic was always there to support my Dortmund, so I’m going as a fan to support his Dortmund.”
Terzic, a lifelong Dortmund supporter and former youth coach during Klopp’s tenure, has frequently attended games as a fan. This includes the 2013 final at Wembley where Klopp’s Dortmund narrowly lost to Bayern Munich.
Klopp emphasized his commitment by posting on Instagram before the kickoff, stating: “Tonight I am a fan!”
At 56, Klopp plans to spend his time away from football traveling with his family, for whom he is building a house in Majorca, and simply enjoying the sport again. Reflecting on his future, Klopp mentioned his intention to watch games freely, saying, “I will come and watch games, and if whoever is the next manager [of Liverpool] doesn’t like having me in the stands, this time, I couldn’t be bothered.”
He added that during his time at Mainz and Dortmund, he didn’t attend matches of former clubs due to his commitments. Now, he looks forward to attending football games without such constraints.
