Jurgen Klopp reveals he was unaware of Adam Lallana’s struggles at Liverpool

Adam Lallana experienced a remarkable transformation at Liverpool under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp, both on and off the pitch.

When Klopp took charge of Liverpool in October 2015, Lallana was still struggling to win over the fans following his move from Southampton 15 months earlier. Reflecting on his journey in an interview with Sky Sports, Lallana revealed that he felt “insecure, big time” and uncomfortable in various aspects of his new environment at Liverpool.

However, Klopp’s arrival marked a turning point for the No. 20. Lallana recalled how Klopp’s positive energy and charisma immediately lifted his spirits: “Straightaway he took that away. Straightaway that big aura and that big smile just hit you.”

Klopp, responding to Lallana’s comments, confessed: “I didn’t know and I didn’t realise that Adam Lallana felt like he felt before I arrived. Obviously, I was not there, but I loved the player from the first moment.”

Despite frequent injury setbacks, Lallana became a beloved figure under Klopp and exemplified the manager’s footballing philosophy. A memorable moment from Klopp’s first match, when Lallana fell into his arms after being substituted against Tottenham, illustrated the immediate bond between the players and their new coach.

Lallana’s influence was particularly notable during Liverpool’s European campaigns. In a key match, with Liverpool trailing 1-0 from the first leg in Spain, an early own goal at Anfield brought hope. Lallana shone alongside Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho, and Daniel Sturridge, who scored Liverpool’s second goal after 63 minutes. Lallana’s composed flick sealed the victory, propelling the Reds to the final.

Lallana departed Liverpool with an impressive collection of medals, including the Champions League, Premier League, and Club World Cup. His success was significantly shaped by Klopp’s support and leadership.
