Klopp Rules Out England Manager Role: “Not Interested in Club or Country Jobs”

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he is not in the running to replace Gareth Southgate as England’s head coach. Southgate resigned after England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, sparking speculation about his successor. Although Klopp was considered a potential candidate, the 57-year-old German has distanced himself from the rumours.

Speaking at the International Coaches’ Congress in Wurzburg, Klopp addressed the speculation, stating, “Currently, there are no job offers from any clubs or national teams. It would be the biggest loss of face in football history to make an exception now.”

Klopp, who stepped down from his role at Liverpool last season after nine successful years, cited a lack of energy as the reason for his departure. Despite this, he remains open to returning to football in some capacity. “I’m too young to just play padel tennis and spend time with my grandchildren. Whether I will coach again is uncertain, but I won’t rule it out,” he said.

Bookmakers continue to list Klopp as a 6/1 contender for the England job, although he has made it clear that no offers are currently on the table. Newcastle’s Eddie Howe, who reaffirmed his commitment to the Magpies, former Brighton and Chelsea manager Graham Potter, and England Under-21s boss Lee Carsley are also in the running.

Reflecting on his future, Klopp added, “As of today, I’m done with coaching. It wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision, but a considered one. I’ve had the privilege of managing some of the best clubs in the world. Maybe in a few months, we can revisit this. I still want to contribute to football and use my experience to help others. We’ll see what opportunities arise.”
