Jurgen Klopp is set to return to the dugout next month for a special one-off match, four months after stepping down as Liverpool’s manager.
After nearly a decade of success with Liverpool, Klopp and the club parted ways this summer, with the former Reds boss now exploring new ventures.
One of these ventures will bring Klopp back to Borussia Dortmund, where he will manage the team in a testimonial match on September 7. The game will honor former Dortmund players Lukasz Piszczek and Jakub Blaszczykowski, both of whom were key figures during Klopp’s time at the club.
The announcement came via a playful video shared on Dortmund’s social media channels, where Piszczek and Blaszczykowski called the “retired coach” to invite him to lead their teams for the match. Klopp humorously responded, saying, “You finally have your farewell game! My god! And you want to train before the game? Are you stupid?!”
When asked if he would coach one team or both, Klopp joked, “I couldn’t care less! I don’t worry about it at all. I’ll do it like I used to: start thinking about it five minutes beforehand.”
Since leaving Liverpool, Klopp has stayed true to his word of taking a break from management, citing exhaustion as the reason for his departure. While rumours have linked him to roles with the USA men’s national team and even as a successor to Gareth Southgate with England, Klopp has consistently dismissed these speculations.
He made it clear in July that he wasn’t looking to return to coaching anytime soon. “As of today, that’s it for me as a coach,” Klopp told ESPN. “I didn’t quit on a whim; it was a general decision. I’ve also coached the best clubs in the world. Maybe we can talk about it again in a few months. I still want to work in football and help people with my experience and contacts. Let’s see what else there is for me.”
For now, Klopp has been enjoying some well-deserved downtime in Mallorca with his family and friends. However, fans are hopeful that they’ll see him back on the sidelines at Anfield for a Legends game in the near future.
