Mac Allister recently shared a poignant moment with Jurgen Klopp during the German’s farewell from Liverpool last month. Speaking to TyC Sports in Argentina ahead of the Copa America, the midfielder revealed a regret that Klopp expressed to him.
Mac Allister, who signed with the Reds exactly a year ago today, recounted how Klopp wished they had more time together. “At one point we gave each other a hug, and he told me that it was a shame we had only shared a year. It gave me a lot of confidence for the future. He told me what I already knew: that I was at the right club to continue growing,” said the 2022 World Cup winner.
Klopp has had the privilege of coaching some truly great players during his nine seasons at Anfield, many of whom were with him for a substantial part of his tenure. It’s intriguing to imagine how much he could have further developed Mac Allister’s talent if he had stayed longer.
In his debut season with Liverpool, the 25-year-old demonstrated that he belongs in a team with Premier League title aspirations. This transition can be challenging for players moving from mid-table teams to title contenders, but Mac Allister has shown he’s up to the task.
When he returns to Liverpool next month, Mac Allister will be working under his fourth manager in just over two years. Following Klopp, he previously flourished under Roberto De Zerbi and Graham Potter at Brighton. As he enters what is typically a footballer’s peak period, new Liverpool manager Arne Slot might be the one to unlock the very best in Mac Allister.
While it’s unfortunate that Mac Allister didn’t get more time with Klopp at Liverpool, there is strong belief that the new head coach will help him reach even greater heights in the coming seasons. Klopp’s parting words of confidence and encouragement will surely inspire Mac Allister as he continues his journey with the Reds.
