Liverpool defender Calvin Ramsay has secured a loan move to Wigan Athletic in League One, marking his third temporary switch since joining the Reds.
Ramsay’s time at Liverpool, following his transfer from Aberdeen in 2022, has been plagued by injuries, hindering his development significantly.
After a challenging debut season at Anfield, the right-back was loaned to Preston last summer. However, limited playing opportunities led to his early return in January, followed by another short-lived stint at Bolton.
In an effort to provide Ramsay with more consistent game time, Liverpool has now arranged a season-long loan with Wigan for the 2024/25 campaign. Ramsay will join Shaun Maloney’s squad at the Brick Community Stadium from the start of pre-season.
This move continues a trend of cooperation between Liverpool and Wigan, with James Balagizi and Luke Chambers also having been loaned to the Latics in the past year. Chambers, in particular, thrived during his half-season at Wigan, making 17 starts in 18 appearances, and contributing a goal and three assists.
Liverpool is hopeful that Ramsay will have a similarly successful spell, as the young Scot seeks to regain momentum in his career. Despite being only 21 in July, Ramsay has seen very limited action, accumulating less than 10 hours of play over the past two years.
“Calvin brings a dynamic and aggressive style of play, capable of contributing from both flanks of our defense,” Maloney commented on Wigan’s official site. “He is highly motivated to help our team succeed this season and will be integrated from the first day of pre-season. I am eager to assist Calvin in adapting quickly and effectively.”
This loan is seen as a critical opportunity for Ramsay to gain the much-needed game time and experience to rejuvenate his prospects at Liverpool.
