Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg is on the verge of completing a transfer away from Anfield, with Brentford emerging as his chosen destination.
The Dutch centre-back has been linked with a move throughout the summer, with Brentford and Bayer Leverkusen both showing strong interest. Just yesterday, renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Liverpool had given the green light to both clubs, having agreed to a £20 million deal, plus £5 million in potential add-ons. With both offers on the table, the final decision was left to Van den Berg after discussions with the respective managers.
In a recent update, Romano confirmed that Van den Berg has decided to join Brentford. The young defender is set to undergo a medical today, ahead of finalizing his move to the Bees. Romano shared the news on X, stating: “Sepp van den Berg has decided to go to Brentford as he accepted their proposal, here we go! Liverpool and Brentford finalising deal for £25m package while player set for medical tests later today. Deal to be sealed in the next 24h.”
With Van den Berg’s departure nearly complete and uncertainty surrounding Joe Gomez’s future, Liverpool may need to reassess their defensive lineup. Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate are expected to be the first-choice centre-back pairing under new manager Arne Slot, but the club’s depth in this area could become a concern.
Should Gomez also exit, Liverpool would be left with Jarell Quansah as their only backup option, potentially leaving them vulnerable if injuries or suspensions impact their starting defenders. As the transfer window approaches its close, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will look to reinforce their defensive ranks.
