Liverpool Clinch £29.6m Transfer for Mamardashvili – Medical Examination Happening Today

Liverpool has finalized an agreement to sign Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, though he won’t be joining the club immediately.

The 23-year-old, who has been Valencia’s first-choice keeper since early 2022, is part of Liverpool’s long-term planning strategy.

Mamardashvili has been a topic of transfer discussions for several weeks as Liverpool worked out the details of a deal that won’t see him join Arne Slot‘s squad this season. Instead, the Georgian international will sign a contract valued at €35 million (£29.6m), including add-ons, according to journalist David Lynch. The agreement will keep him in Spain for the 2024/25 season, with the Reds set to decide next summer whether to bring him to Anfield, keep him at Valencia, or send him out on loan.

Standing at 6’6″, Mamardashvili has already made 102 appearances for Valencia and will undergo a medical on Monday, August 26. His future move to Liverpool could be influenced by the situation surrounding Alisson, who remains the club’s first-choice goalkeeper and has recently reaffirmed his commitment to Liverpool.

This signing is part of Liverpool’s broader strategy to ensure they don’t face a sudden need to replace key players like Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, who are nearing the ends of their contracts. Mamardashvili is a promising young talent, already capped 21 times by Georgia, known for his quick reflexes and agility.

Mamardashvili began his career at Dinamo Tbilisi and joined Valencia in 2021 after loan spells at FC Rustavi and Locomotive Tbilisi. His performances helped Georgia reach the last 16 of this summer’s European Championship, where he recorded the most saves per 90 minutes (7.5) and prevented 4.7 goals, according to FotMob.

Victor Mongil, a defender who trained with Mamardashvili at Dinamo Tbilisi, described him as an agile and fast goalkeeper who excels at handling low shots—an area where taller keepers like Thibaut Courtois and Gianluigi Donnarumma sometimes struggle.

Although many Liverpool fans may hope for further signings this summer, Mamardashvili’s arrival is a significant step in the club’s succession planning.
