Liverpool Declines Opportunity to Acquire Newcastle Winger Anthony Gordon

Liverpool has turned down the chance to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United. The Magpies are under pressure to make a sale by the June 30 deadline to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations.

In a bid to alleviate their financial concerns, Newcastle proposed the idea of Liverpool taking Gordon off their hands. Despite their longstanding admiration for the former Everton winger, Liverpool opted not to pursue the offer.

One key reason for this decision is Liverpool’s ample options on the left wing, including Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, and Cody Gakpo, all of whom can effectively cover that position. Additionally, Newcastle’s attempt to include young center-back Jarell Quansah in the deal was a non-starter for Liverpool. Quansah, who had a breakthrough season, is seen as a future pillar of the Anfield defense.

Beyond Gordon, Newcastle also reportedly offered striker Alexander Isak to Chelsea in their efforts to balance the books.

Gordon joined Newcastle in January 2023 and made a significant impact, scoring 12 goals and providing 11 assists in 48 appearances during the 2023/24 season. His impressive performance earned him the title of Newcastle’s player of the season and a call-up to England’s squad for the summer Euros. However, his time on the pitch during the tournament was limited, with only a brief appearance as a substitute in the final group game against Slovenia.

Capable of playing across the forward line, Gordon’s preferred position is on the left wing. His status as a homegrown player adds further appeal to Premier League clubs.

As Newcastle scrambles to meet the financial deadline, their weakened negotiating position could benefit other clubs looking to acquire their players.
