Liverpool are reportedly in talks to secure the services of Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with multiple meetings held between the club and the player’s representatives.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano highlighted the Reds’ strong interest in the Brazilian midfielder. Speaking on his live show on Playback, Romano noted that while discussions have commenced, Liverpool have yet to make a formal offer to Atalanta.
“I would not be surprised if Liverpool go for a midfielder this summer because they have had several meetings and contacts with the agents of Ederson from Atalanta,” Romano said. “He is one of the players that Liverpool considered in the midfield, but never sent a proposal, also because they know it’s going to be difficult, it’s going to be complicated.”
Ederson joined Atalanta from Salernitana for €22.9 million in June 2022. In the 2023-24 season, he was instrumental in helping La Dea lift the Europa League, their first major trophy in 61 years. The Brazilian scored seven goals and provided one assist in 53 games across all competitions last season, showcasing his impact beyond just goalscoring. Ederson made the second-most tackles in the 2023-24 Serie A campaign (83 in 36 games, 2.3 per game). He also ranked sixth in ball recoveries (87) and was among the top 20 in the league for interceptions (39) and duels won (171), according to Kickest.it.
Offensively, Ederson placed in the top 19 percentile among players in his position for progressive passing, per FBRef. These statistics underscore his role as an all-around enforcer, a profile that new Liverpool manager Arne Slot is reportedly keen on adding to his squad.
Where does Ederson fit in Arne Slot’s Liverpool?
Liverpool squad gears up for pre-season training kickoffLiverpool’s current midfield features more technically gifted and offensive-minded players like Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, and Curtis Jones. The closest player to Ederson in the Reds squad is Ryan Gravenberch, and Slot is likely eager to bring in the Brazilian to provide healthy competition for the defensive midfield role.
Japanese midfielder Wataru Endo, at 31, is nearing the end of his peak years. With the rest of Liverpool’s midfield averaging around 22 years old, signing Ederson as a replacement would better align with their long-term project. The midfielder, who turns 25 tomorrow (July 7), has a contract with Atalanta until 2027. Currently valued at approximately £34 million (via Transfermarkt), Atalanta’s asking price for Ederson is set at £42 million. If Liverpool decides to move forward with the transfer, it could prove to be a valuable long-term investment.
