Liverpool might be edging closer to securing their first signing under Arne Slot’s leadership at Anfield.
According to TEAMtalk, the Reds are preparing to initiate personal negotiations with Lutsharel Geertruida in the coming days, despite facing stiff competition from Arsenal. Feyenoord had hoped to retain the talented full-back, but with his contract expiring next year, they’re now ready to sell him this summer to avoid losing him for free.
Arsenal’s strong interest in the 23-year-old is reportedly pushing Liverpool to expedite their efforts to reunite him with his former Feyenoord boss, Slot. Both Premier League clubs believe Geertruida will seamlessly adapt to the English top flight.
Fans will have the opportunity to see more of Geertruida at Euro 2024, as he has been included in the Netherlands squad for the tournament. Although primarily a right-back, the Dutch defender has proven to be a formidable attacking presence under Slot, netting nine goals and providing five assists last season despite his defensive role (Transfermarkt).
Geertruida excels in non-penalty goals, non-penalty xG, and progressive passes per game, ranking among the top 1% of his positional peers in Europe over the past year. He also boasts an impressive pass completion rate (FBref). However, his core defensive metrics, such as tackles, interceptions, and blocks per 90 minutes, are less impressive, which could be a concern against top-tier Premier League forwards.
Another point of consideration is whether Geertruida’s arrival could hinder the development of Conor Bradley, who showed great promise earlier this year. Bradley’s growth might be stunted if Geertruida’s presence limits his playing time.
Despite these concerns, Geertruida would bring an exciting dynamic to Liverpool’s flanks, capable of playing on both the right and left sides. His addition would provide Slot with a wealth of options in the full-back positions, potentially enhancing the team’s versatility and attacking prowess.
