Liverpool Confirms List of Departing Players, Including Thiago and Joel Matip
Liverpool FC has officially announced the list of players whose contracts have expired, with eight academy graduates joining Thiago and Joel Matip in leaving the club.
Ahead of the final game of the season, the club revealed that both Matip and Thiago would be released upon the expiration of their contracts. This allowed the pair to receive a proper send-off alongside Jurgen Klopp and his staff. However, they are not the only ones set to depart.
Eight additional players will become free agents this summer. Notable academy graduates Adam Lewis, 24, Mateusz Musialowski, 20, and Melkamu Frauendorf, 20, are among them. Despite having made first-team appearances, these players struggled to secure regular opportunities and will now seek new clubs.
The other players leaving include goalkeeper Luke Hewitson, 19, defenders Niall Osborne, 19, Francis Gyimah, 17, and Nathan Giblin, 18, and midfielder Cody Pennington, 17.
Liverpool has also confirmed contract offers to Adrian and training goalkeepers Reece Trueman, 19, and Jacob Poytress, 20.
While there are few surprises in Liverpool’s released list, the departures of Musialowski and Frauendorf may bring some disappointment. Both were considered highly talented prospects when they joined from SMS Lodz and Hoffenheim, respectively, in 2020 and demonstrated their potential during their time in the academy.
Musialowski made his first-team debut as recently as March, coming off the bench in the 6-1 win over Sparta Prague in the Europa League. Frauendorf, meanwhile, has made two senior appearances, including a start against Derby in the Carabao Cup, but his final season was marred by injuries.
