Liverpool are in the market to strengthen their goalkeeping roster this summer.
With recent reports linking them to Juventus’ newly signed goalkeeper, Michele Di Gregorio
Currently, Adrian remains on Liverpool’s books, though he has yet to sign the offered contract extension, and a return to his boyhood club, Real Betis, seems likely. His potential departure leaves a gap in the experience department for Liverpool’s third-choice goalkeeper. Additionally, Caoimhin Kelleher has expressed his desire to be a first-choice keeper, casting doubt over his future with the Reds.
While the situation with Kelleher remains unresolved, Liverpool have been exploring other goalkeeping options. Di Gregorio, who recently joined Juventus from Monza on an initial loan deal, was one such target. Despite Italian media linking him to Liverpool, his agent, Carlo Belloni, confirmed that talks with the Reds occurred only after committing to Juventus.
Belloni explained to TV Play: “There were talks with Liverpool and, obviously, we were very pleased to hear from them. However, we had no doubts about the choice after speaking with [Cristiano] Giuntoli (Juventus sporting director). We remained faithful to Juve because it was what he wanted, what Juve wanted and Thiago Motta immediately came up with Di Gregorio’s name.”
The 26-year-old Italian goalkeeper was targeted by Juventus as they anticipate Wojciech Szczesny’s move to Saudi Arabia. Di Gregorio made 144 appearances for Monza over four seasons, achieving 53 clean sheets, making him a highly regarded prospect.
Liverpool’s interest in Di Gregorio isn’t isolated. They’ve also been linked to Athletico Paranaense’s Bento, a move that aligns with their Brazilian connections through Alisson and coach Claudio Taffarel. This indicates Liverpool’s proactive approach in bolstering their goalkeeping options.
Sporting director Richard Hughes emphasized the club’s readiness to seize opportunities: “We will always be opportunistic if we can. If we can improve as we go, we will look to do that.”
The final decisions on Adrian and Kelleher will be pivotal, but Liverpool’s strategy underscores the necessity of being proactive rather than reactive in the transfer market. As the summer progresses, fans can expect more moves as Liverpool aims to secure their goalkeeping future.
