Liverpool Mulling Over Final Hour Move for Juventus’ Federico Chiesa

As the transfer window edges closer to its deadline on Friday, reports suggest that Liverpool are “considering” a move for Juventus winger Federico Chiesa.

Even though adding a winger wasn’t a top priority for Liverpool this summer, sporting director Richard Hughes had previously mentioned that the club would be open to “opportunistic” signings. Chiesa seems to fit that bill, especially as Barcelona struggles to finalize their interest in the soon-to-be 27-year-old.

Fabrizio Romano first reported on Monday evening that Liverpool had made an “initial approach” for Chiesa, a claim that was quickly backed by the reputable Paul Joyce, who noted that the Reds are “weighing up interest” in the player. This story quickly gained momentum as more journalists in Merseyside echoed similar updates. Although Chiesa’s potential addition would bolster Liverpool’s attacking depth, it’s clear that this move wasn’t widely anticipated.

Liverpool has been tracking the talented winger for some time, with rumours in 2021 suggesting that the club had tried to sign him while he was still at Fiorentina. Currently, Chiesa is under contract with Juventus until 2025, but the Italian club is reportedly open to negotiations. His potential transfer fee, rumoured to be around £12 million, could make him an attractive option for Liverpool. However, his injury history is a concern, particularly in light of Liverpool’s recent issues with player fitness.

Chiesa’s injury record includes a torn ACL in the 2021/22 season, followed by various muscle fatigue problems and soft-tissue injuries. This has led to a mixed reaction among fans, with some wondering if he might be another Xherdan Shaqiri or Arthur—a talented player who struggles to stay fit.

Whether Liverpool ultimately moves forward with Chiesa or not, the fact that these reports have surfaced indicates that the club is actively pursuing signings before the transfer window closes. Securing Chiesa on a cut-price deal would indeed be an “opportunistic” move, but the clock is ticking for Liverpool to make any final decisions.
