Liverpool player subtly criticizes former coach Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate seems to have subtly criticized former Reds manager Jurgen Klopp over his limited playing time at the end of the season. Despite being expected to secure a starting role in France’s defense for EURO 2024 after finishing behind Jarell Quansah at Liverpool, Konate has found himself sidelined in favor of William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano.

Throughout most of the previous campaign, Klopp paired Konate with Virgil van Dijk as his preferred central defenders. However, towards the season’s end, Klopp chose to play the young Jarell Quansah over Konate, relegating the Frenchman to the bench. This decision has seemingly extended to the national stage, where Konate has yet to play a single minute for France at the Euros.

Konate has expressed his dissatisfaction with his lack of game time, both at Liverpool and with the French national team. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, as translated by Sport Witness, he acknowledged the frustration but also the reality of the situation. “I came with a lot of expectations; that’s part of football,” Konate said. “I knew what my place was before the first match. It’s frustrating, but I know my role on and off the field. A 100 percent ‘Ibou’ would never have sat on the bench.”

Reflecting on his season with Liverpool, Konate revealed the challenges he faced due to the short preparation time. “I didn’t play for a month and a half! I prepared, I almost passed out more than once. The preparation was very short. It’s part of football. It was a good lesson for me.”

Clearly discontented with Klopp’s late-season choices, Konate has every reason to be frustrated. Klopp’s preference for Quansah alongside Van Dijk limited Konate’s opportunities, confining him to the bench. Now, with the arrival of new manager Arne Slot, Konate will be eager to prove himself and secure a regular starting position.

For Konate to get playing time at the Euros, it seems only an injury to Saliba or Upamecano would pave the way for his inclusion in the starting lineup. As he navigates this challenging period, Konate remains determined to showcase his abilities and regain his place on the field.
