Liverpool are already laying the groundwork for their future transfer strategies.
After a relatively quiet summer window, in which they made just two signings, the club is now looking ahead to strengthen their squad.
The Reds brought in goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia and secured Federico Chiesa from Juventus. However, they faced a significant setback when Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi turned down a move to Anfield.
According to Fichajes, Liverpool have now shifted their focus to Zubimendi’s teammate, Japanese playmaker Takefusa Kubo. The Premier League club has held a long-term interest in Kubo and is prepared to trigger his £50.6 million release clause. Financial constraints won’t be an issue, as Liverpool was ready to spend a similar amount to sign Zubimendi.
The club’s growing interest in attacking players comes as Mohamed Salah’s future remains uncertain. The Egyptian star has entered the final year of his contract, raising the possibility of his departure next summer. As a result, Liverpool must consider potential replacements, and Kubo has emerged as a serious option.
Like Salah, Kubo is left-footed but prefers to play on the right wing, making him a natural candidate for the role. The 23-year-old has scored one goal in four La Liga appearances this season, but his goal-scoring output will need improvement if he is to succeed at Anfield. Last season, he netted seven times in La Liga, a number that might fall short of expectations for someone viewed as Salah’s replacement.
Nicknamed the “Japanese Messi” due to his technical ability and playing style, Kubo has drawn comparisons to Lionel Messi. However, he still has room to grow and develop into a consistent goal scorer and playmaker.
While Kubo’s potential is undeniable, whether he can fill the massive void left by Salah remains to be seen. The Reds are making preparations for life after Salah, but they will need patience as Kubo continues to refine his skills on the pitch.
