Liverpool FC is setting a high price for Caoimhin Kelleher, demanding well over £20 million for his transfer this summer. The Irish goalkeeper has garnered significant attention after a standout season as Alisson’s backup.
Interest in Kelleher is expected to surge during the upcoming transfer window, particularly following his impressive performances. Last summer, Burnley acquired Manchester City’s James Trafford for £19 million, despite his first-team experience being limited to loan spells in League One.
In contrast, Kelleher is approaching 50 appearances for Liverpool, contributing to two successful League Cup runs. At 25, Kelleher had his most active season yet, featuring in 26 matches across all competitions due to Alisson’s muscle injury. Notably, his stellar performance in the League Cup final, where he made nine saves against Chelsea at Wembley, was crucial in securing a 1-0 extra-time victory.
Despite his accomplishments at Anfield, Kelleher acknowledged in a recent interview with The Athletic that he might need to leave Liverpool to secure a first-choice role. “Whether it’s here at Liverpool or somewhere else, I do feel the next step for me is to be a No. 1,” he stated.
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hinted last season that the club is determined to uphold their valuation of Kelleher. Klopp emphasized the need for a substantial offer to consider a sale, dismissing the idea of a £15 million or £20 million deal as unrealistic. He noted, “It would have had to be a proper price to give us a chance of doing something in a difficult market. It is not like other goalkeepers moving from A to B for £15 million or £20 million. That is totally unrealistic and nonsense.”
