A Bundesliga club has set its sights on a Liverpool player as a priority target for the upcoming summer transfer window.

According to TEAMtalk, Mainz have made it a ‘clear goal’ to secure a permanent move for Sepp van den Berg, who has been on loan at the MEWA Arena this season. The 22-year-old defender is slated to return to Anfield once the campaign concludes, but Mainz are keen to retain his services beyond his loan spell.

Mainz officials have been highly impressed with Van den Berg’s performances over the past nine months and hope their strong relationship with Liverpool will give them an advantage in securing the Dutch defender. It’s reported that the Bundesliga side could acquire him for just £6m, which would be a bargain considering his consistent presence in a top European league.

Van den Berg might be eager to showcase his talents to new Liverpool manager Arne Slot during pre-season, especially with a spot in the first-team squad available following Joel Matip’s departure. The young defender has demonstrated his capabilities at a high level in Germany, making his 31st Bundesliga start of the season in today’s match against Wolfsburg. His current boss, Bo Henriksen, has even labeled him a ‘leader’ on the field.

With this experience under his belt, Van den Berg will naturally want to continue playing regularly next season. The crucial question is whether he will have the opportunity to do so at Liverpool. If he’s willing to fight for his place, he could be a valuable squad member at Anfield. However, if he prefers a permanent move to Mainz, where he’s likely to be a regular starter, it’s understandable why he might choose that path.

Liverpool will need to decide whether to retain Van den Berg or cash in on him. Given his age and proven ability at a high level, the Reds should aim to secure a substantial fee if they decide to sell. Whether he stays or goes, Van den Berg’s next move will be pivotal for his career development.
