Sepp van den Berg Seeks Liverpool Exit After Criticizing Club’s Treatment

Sepp van den Berg has expressed his frustration with Liverpool and revealed his desire to leave the club this summer, following what he perceives as mistreatment.

The 22-year-old defender, who joined Liverpool with high expectations in 2019, has just finished a successful loan spell in the Bundesliga with Mainz. Initially seen as a potential successor to Virgil van Dijk, van den Berg’s optimism has waned due to a series of unmet promises.

“In all honesty, I was no longer looked after,” van den Berg told De Telegraaf. “I knew for sure that I couldn’t get into Liverpool’s first team from PEC Zwolle [in 2019]. I could have spent another year or two at Liverpool, but I really wanted to play. I demanded to be loaned out every time because I felt I was getting better and better. I also made great strides physically.”

Van den Berg explained that he felt “ready” to compete for a place in the first team after receiving positive feedback from the manager. Despite understanding that surpassing Van Dijk, Joel Matip, or Ibrahima Konate was unlikely, he believed he could at least secure a backup role. However, when opportunities didn’t materialize, he decided to seek another loan move.

“When I didn’t get a chance again, I said, ‘Figure it out, I want to leave again’.”

Van den Berg’s performances at Mainz have attracted interest from multiple clubs. Recent reports indicate that Liverpool values the Dutch defender, who is nearing the final two years of his contract, at £20 million—a figure that has frustrated him.

“You have not radiated confidence in me all this time, but you do want to hinder my future,” he said regarding his price tag. “I want to continue playing every week and further develop myself.”

The Athletic reports that Mainz is keen to bring van den Berg back, while Premier League sides Brentford and Southampton are also interested in the 22-year-old.

As van den Berg looks to secure his future, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will accommodate his wish to leave or if they will hold firm on their valuation.
