Real Betis is set to acquire Liverpool’s goalkeeper Adrian on a free transfer this summer.
The Spanish shot-stopper’s contract with Liverpool concludes at the end of this month, paving the way for his return to his former club.
Adrian, who joined Liverpool on a free transfer from West Ham United in 2019, quickly made an impact by helping the Reds secure victory against Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup. Initially brought in as the backup to Alisson Becker, he later found himself as the third-choice goalkeeper due to the rise of Caoimhin Kelleher. Adrian’s last appearance for Liverpool came in the Community Shield win over Manchester City in July 2022.
Fabrizio Romano, reporting via ABC Sevilla, has confirmed that Adrian has reached an agreement to rejoin Real Betis once his current contract with Liverpool expires on June 30. This move marks a homecoming for the 37-year-old, who started his professional career at Betis and played there until 2013 before moving to the Premier League.
At Real Betis, Adrian is expected to replace Claudio Bravo, the Chilean veteran whose contract also ends on June 30. Betis, set to compete in the UEFA Europa Conference League in the 2024-25 season, will likely rely on Adrian as their primary goalkeeper.
9Adrian’s departure marks the third senior player exit from Liverpool on a free transfer this summer, following Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip. Liverpool will need to either promote a goalkeeper from their academy or bring in an experienced replacement to fill the third-choice spot for the upcoming season.
