Liverpool are closely monitoring Bordeaux’s young defender Mathys Angély after the French club filed for bankruptcy, according to reports.
Once a dominant force in French football, Bordeaux, who won Ligue 1 as recently as 2009, has experienced a dramatic decline. This week, their woes reached a nadir with the club declaring bankruptcy following unsuccessful takeover discussions with FSG.
As a consequence, Bordeaux has been administratively relegated to the French third tier, stripping them of their professional status despite a 12th-place finish in Ligue 2 last season. This storied club, which has nurtured talents like Zinedine Zidane, Bixente Lizarazu, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Jules Kounde, is now poised to release all its first-team and academy players.
Among those affected is 17-year-old center-back Mathys Angély. Despite his age, Angély has already made five senior appearances for Bordeaux and earned eight caps for France at various youth levels. His potential has naturally attracted considerable interest, with Liverpool reportedly leading the chase, as per Foot Mercato.
Liverpool’s pursuit of Angély is not new. The club, owned by FSG—who recently attempted to acquire Bordeaux—had previously sought to secure the defender’s services before he extended his contract with Bordeaux until 2028. However, with Bordeaux’s bankruptcy, Angély, who is also adept at playing as a defensive midfielder, is now set to become a free agent this summer.
