Liverpool Advocate for Complete Ban on Associated Party Transactions in Premier League
Liverpool is among several Premier League clubs pushing for a complete ban on associated party transactions within the league. Finance expert Stefan Borson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, revealed that Liverpool is advocating for this ban as they do not benefit from such sponsorship deals themselves.
Manchester City is currently challenging the Premier League’s regulations on associated party deals, labeling the rules as “unlawful.” The Premier League had intensified the scrutiny on sponsorship deals involving related parties back in February. Manchester City’s legal battle commenced with a two-week hearing starting on Monday (10 June), with a verdict anticipated before the 2024-25 season kicks off.
While some clubs may side with City in their challenge, Borson believes Liverpool will strongly oppose them, advocating for a complete ban on these transactions. He stated, “Liverpool will likely be among the most vocal clubs regarding the rules on associated party transactions. They will push for the strengthening of every regulation around this issue.”
Liverpool’s stance is driven by their lack of reliance on associated sponsorship deals as a revenue source. Unlike some clubs, Liverpool is not seeking to bring in partners affiliated with their owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), as sponsors. As a result, they are expected to support a total ban on such deals.
Borson emphasized the self-interest of clubs in these discussions, noting, “Every club around the Premier League table is entitled to look out for its own interests. There’s nothing inherently wrong with clubs prioritizing their own benefits.”
In conclusion, Liverpool’s position against associated party transactions highlights their commitment to ensuring a level playing field in Premier League commercial dealings, positioning themselves as key advocates for stricter regulations in this area.
