Arne Slot to Evaluate Left-Back Options in Pre-Season, Including Two Promising Talents

As Arne Slot takes the helm as Liverpool’s new head coach, he is set to scrutinize his left-back options during the pre-season. The Dutchman, who officially begins his role on July 1, is preparing for a new chapter at Anfield.

Slot will commence his duties while the majority of his squad is either on holiday or engaged in international commitments. His initial interactions with the players are scheduled for pre-season in July. Early training sessions will predominantly feature young prospects and fringe players, with key figures busy with the Euros and World Cup qualifiers.

Among those poised to seize this opportunity are 19-year-old Luke Chambers and 21-year-old Owen Beck, both returning from loan stints at Wigan and Dundee, respectively. According to The Athletic’s Andy Jones, Slot is eager to evaluate his left-back options, with Chambers and Beck being considered.

Chambers and Beck in Contention

Andy Robertson is currently with the Scotland national team, and there are uncertainties about Kostas Tsimikas’ long-term role, as the 28-year-old missed Greece’s matches against Germany and Malta due to injury.

Slot’s arrival offers a fresh start for all players, potentially allowing Chambers and Beck to vie for a permanent place in the first-team squad. Chambers spent the first half of the previous season with Jurgen Klopp’s senior team, making four appearances, including starts against Toulouse and Union SG. He then joined Wigan in January, where he quickly became a key player, alternating between left-back and center-back, and made 18 appearances.

Beck’s loan at Dundee was briefly interrupted by a return to Liverpool in January to cover for an injury crisis, during which he made a substitute appearance against Bournemouth in the Premier League. Overall, Beck played 28 times for Dundee, excelling as a left wing-back with two goals and four assists.

As pre-season kicks off, both Chambers and Beck have a significant chance to impress Slot and secure their places in Liverpool’s plans for the future.
