Liverpool’s Chances of Signing 25-Year-Old Zubimendi Get a Lift with Ornstein’s Report

Liverpool are reportedly making a bold move for Spain’s standout midfielder, Martin Zubimendi, as their top target for the upcoming summer transfer window. This comes in the wake of their ongoing quest to find a suitable replacement for Fabinho, who left the club last year.

The Reds were previously linked with several high-profile players, including Moses Caicedo, who ultimately chose Chelsea. In response, Liverpool signed Wataru Endō, who performed adequately, but it appears new manager Arne Slot does not see Endō as a long-term solution.

Real Sociedad’s Zubimendi has now emerged as Liverpool’s prime candidate. Reports indicate that Liverpool is prepared to activate his €60 million release clause to bring him to Anfield.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Real Sociedad is aware of Liverpool’s interest. While the La Liga club is reluctant to sell, they will honor Zubimendi’s wish to leave if he requests a transfer. Ornstein shared on X: “Real Sociedad aware of Liverpool interest in Martin Zubimendi. No bid yet + La Liga club don’t want to sell but if the 25yo asks to go they will grant wish, say Sociedad sources. Midfielder yet to communicate the decision.”

However, Liverpool faces competition for Zubimendi’s signature. Both Manchester United and Arsenal are reportedly keen on the midfielder. United seek a replacement for the inconsistent Casemiro, while Arsenal aim to strengthen their midfield, with interest in both Zubimendi and Mikel Merino.

Liverpool’s fans are frustrated about the lack of transfer activity, as the team is the only one in the Premier League that has not made a signing this summer. If they secure Zubimendi, it could be their first significant addition under Arne Slot, potentially revitalizing their midfield as the new season approaches.
