Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott Withdraws from International Duty Due to Fitness Concerns

Harvey Elliott was poised to gain significant playing time with the England under-21 squad in the coming week.

However, he has now withdrawn from the squad for “further medical assessment.”

The 21-year-old midfielder has had a limited role for Liverpool this season, featuring for just seven minutes across the first three matches. He remained on the bench during the opening game and again at Old Trafford. Despite this, Elliott was selected to join his Liverpool teammates, Jarell Quansah and Tyler Morton, in representing England U21s for their Euro qualifiers against Northern Ireland and Austria.

Unfortunately, it has been confirmed that Elliott is one of four players who have returned to their clubs after already reporting for international duty. The specific nature of his issue remains unclear, but it does mean he will miss out on a valuable chance for playing time. His availability for Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures is now uncertain.

Liverpool faces a demanding schedule with seven games in 22 days across three competitions once the September international break ends. Elliott was expected to see more opportunities during this period due to the need for rotation within the squad. However, his focus will now shift to recovery ahead of Liverpool’s next match against Nottingham Forest on September 14.

At present, Elliott is likely to join Curtis Jones in the treatment room, making them part of a group of five Liverpool players not involved in international action, which also includes Joe Gomez, Vitezslav Jaros, and Darwin Nunez (who is serving a ban).
