Liverpool reportedly made an attempt to sign Mexican winger Cesar Huerta during the summer transfer window, but the deal ultimately fell through.
Huerta, who plays as a left winger for Club Universidad (commonly known as Pumas), was on Liverpool’s radar in late August, according to reports from Mexico.
Sources like TUDN suggested that Pumas were willing to facilitate the 23-year-old’s move to England, with the transfer said to be on the verge of completion. Plans were even made for Huerta to travel to the UK to finalize the transfer just before the deadline on Friday.
However, the proposed move collapsed when Sunderland rejected a loan deal. Liverpool had intended to loan Huerta out for the season before bringing him to Anfield next summer. The situation was later confirmed by Lema, who told reporters, “El Chino was scouted by one of the best clubs in the world, and that is something to be proud of.”
Lema hinted that the deal might not have been well-received by Pumas fans, as Huerta has been a key player for the team. Last season, he was one of their top performers, contributing 12 goals and nine assists in 41 appearances. This season, Huerta has already scored twice in five games, continuing to play a prominent role on the left wing.
Liverpool’s interest in Huerta comes despite their squad already being strong on the left flank. Luis Diaz’s form has made it difficult for Cody Gakpo to secure a starting position, while Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota, although natural strikers are also capable of playing on the left. Additionally, new signing Federico Chiesa has experience in that position.
Although Liverpool were clearly exploring market opportunities and saw potential in Huerta, a future deal with Pumas now seems unlikely, though it remains a possibility.
