Salah Discusses Liverpool’s Transition Under Arne Slot: Pressing Focus Takes Center Stage
Mohamed Salah has highlighted pressing as the most significant change that Arne Slot has introduced at Liverpool since taking over as head coach. Slot, who arrived at Anfield this summer, stepped into the role following Jurgen Klopp’s successful nine-year tenure, during which the club secured Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup titles among other accolades.
Transitioning from Klopp’s long-standing and effective style to Slot’s new approach requires patience. The Liverpool squad, accustomed to Klopp’s intense tactics, is now adapting to Slot’s methods. Encouragingly, the early results under the Dutchman have been positive, with Liverpool securing 2-0 victories against both Ipswich Town and Brentford in Slot’s first two games in charge.
One of Klopp’s defining strategies at Liverpool was the team’s relentless pressing, which focused on winning the ball back high up the pitch. Under Slot, however, there has been a noticeable shift. The new manager seems to be steering the team towards a more measured, possession-based style, although pressing remains an important element.
Salah recently shared insights into this transition, noting that Slot’s approach requires the players to adjust from the “heavy metal football” they were used to under Klopp. “When you’ve been playing a certain way for seven or eight years, it becomes second nature,” Salah explained to Liverpool’s official website ahead of their match against Manchester United. “The new manager, particularly during pre-season, emphasized that our pressing is different now. He told me, ‘I know you’ve done things a certain way for many years, but I want you to adapt to our new pressing style.’”
Salah acknowledged that adapting to these changes has been a challenge, but so far, it has been effective. “I’m working to adjust, and it’s been going well for all of us so far,” he added. “Hopefully, we can continue to improve in this direction.”
