Reports about Anthony Gordon’s potential transfer to Liverpool present conflicting narratives from Liverpool and Newcastle sources. Over the weekend, it was suggested that Newcastle, aiming to generate funds to avoid financial penalties, offered Gordon to Liverpool, who declined. The proposal reportedly involved Liverpool’s young defender Jarell Quansah, which Liverpool refused.
Even though Newcastle managed to avoid financial sanctions by selling Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, the transfer saga involving Gordon, their No. 10, may not be over. Sources in Newcastle claim that Gordon is intrigued by the idea of returning to Liverpool, the club that released him when he was 11. Liverpool has long been interested in him.
According to Luke Edwards of The Telegraph, contrary to Liverpool sources, it was Liverpool who approached Newcastle, hoping to take advantage of their need to sell quickly. Edwards states that Liverpool knew of Gordon’s desire to join them and leveraged Newcastle’s vulnerable position.
Interestingly, the report mentions that Liverpool discussed including either Quansah or Joe Gomez in the deal. While offering Quansah seems unlikely, including Gomez is more plausible due to his current squad status. However, Liverpool’s official stance indicates they are not in need of additional depth on the left side of their attack, suggesting Newcastle might be fueling the speculation.
Both Edwards and The Athletic’s Chris Waugh agree that Gordon’s interest in moving to Liverpool has affected him significantly. Gordon believed he was on the verge of signing with Liverpool, but no formal bid was made despite discussions between the clubs. Edwards notes that Newcastle is concerned about Gordon’s mindset as he returns, having missed out on his dream move to his childhood club. Newcastle is skeptical about the possibility of reopening negotiations with Liverpool, who never made a formal offer.
