Newcastle CEO Dismisses Anthony Gordon Transfer Speculations
Newcastle United’s chief executive has delivered a decisive statement regarding the potential sale of Anthony Gordon, following brief links to Liverpool. For a short period, it seemed plausible that Gordon could join his boyhood club this summer after being offered to Liverpool by Newcastle.
The Magpies were looking to meet their Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) targets to avoid any sanctions, and the England winger was among those rumoured to be available for transfer. However, Liverpool reportedly declined the deal due to Newcastle’s terms, which included a substantial transfer fee and the inclusion of Jarell Quansah.
Despite some within Newcastle fearing that Gordon’s interest in Liverpool had been piqued, chief executive Darren Eales made it clear that he will not be sold. Eales told journalists, including Dominic Shaw of the Northern Echo:
“Look, you know what the market is like; there will always be noise around any sort of transfer deadline. For us, it was one of those situations where we knew what we had to get to. In the end, we had to do the deals that were right for the club, that made us compliant. So, from that perspective, we did what we had to do.
“But we kept what I would say are our core players, the type of players like Isak, Gordon, Bruno, Joelinton – those players who are our core.”
When asked by The Athletic if he expected Gordon, Alexander Isak, and Bruno Guimaraes to remain Newcastle players this season, Eales confidently replied: “Yes.”
Liverpool, meanwhile, are not expected to pursue Gordon further. Their interest in him came after a previous enquiry into his availability. Currently, Liverpool’s squad is well-equipped in Gordon’s preferred position on the left wing, with players like Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota, and Darwin Nunez all capable of filling that role.
If Luis Diaz were to leave – with both Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain reportedly interested – Liverpool’s stance might change. However, it is more likely that any new attacking signings would focus on the right wing, given Mohamed Salah is in the final year of his contract.
