Manchester City’s Pursuit of Xabi Alonso Could Frustrate Liverpool Fans Once Again
In recent years, Manchester City has developed a knack for frustrating Liverpool supporters, and they may be poised to do so again in the coming year.
According to Football Transfers, the Premier League champions are eyeing Xabi Alonso as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola if the current manager decides to step down at the end of next season, a possibility Guardiola has previously hinted at. Sources indicate that Alonso, currently managing Bayer Leverkusen, is the only candidate being seriously considered by City’s top brass, who unanimously believe the former Liverpool midfielder would be the ideal replacement.
Earlier this year, Liverpool had also considered Alonso as a replacement for Jurgen Klopp. However, Alonso chose to stay committed to Bayer Leverkusen, who have since become Bundesliga champions, leading Liverpool to appoint Arne Slot instead.
The prospect of Alonso becoming the next Manchester City manager would be a tough pill for Liverpool fans to swallow. Alonso, who won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005, is beloved on Merseyside. Seeing him take charge of one of their fiercest rivals would undoubtedly tarnish his legacy in the eyes of many Reds supporters.
Compounding the frustration is the ongoing controversy surrounding Manchester City. The club faces 115 charges for breaching the Premier League’s PSR regulations, casting a shadow over their successes under Guardiola. Legal battles and potential heavy penalties, including points deductions or even relegation, loom large.
If City were found guilty and faced severe punishments, it’s hard to imagine a manager of Alonso’s caliber leaving a stable environment in Leverkusen for a club mired in such unprecedented turmoil. Nonetheless, there’s no certainty that Guardiola will leave next year, nor that Alonso would want to step into the hot seat at the Etihad if he does.
Liverpool fans can only hope that Alonso, a cherished figure in their history, will avoid risking his Reds legacy by joining a club that has caused them so much anguish in recent years.
