Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is confident that Mohamed Salah remains fully focused despite recent speculation about his future at the club. The Egyptian forward, whose contract expires this summer, created headlines following Sunday’s victory over Southampton when he made rare comments to reporters. Salah stated, “We’re almost in December, and I haven’t received any offers to stay. I’m probably more out than in.”
The timing of these remarks sparked criticism, with former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher labelling them “selfish” for overshadowing an important week for Liverpool. The club is preparing for two major clashes—against Real Madrid in the Champions League and Manchester City in the Premier League. Despite the attention on Salah’s words, Slot emphasized that neither Salah nor his teammates appear distracted.
“The only thing I can say is that when I look at my line-ups, Mo is always more ‘in’ than ‘out,’” Slot said, responding to Carragher’s critique. “Carragher also said Mo is one of the five greatest players in Liverpool’s history, and I completely agree. That’s a big statement considering the legends this club has had.
“From what I’ve seen, these comments haven’t affected Mo’s mindset at all. If anything, it might motivate him even more, judging by his performances so far this season. My focus is on the next game, and I’m confident the players share that mindset. We’re preparing for Real Madrid, then City, and the challenges just keep coming.”
Slot confirmed he regularly communicates with Salah about what he expects on the pitch, just as he does with other players. “Mo is in a good place. I’m not distracted by what he said, and I don’t think the players are either. In training, there’s been no sign of distraction—maybe just a bit of joking around because players like to give each other stick. But they’re all fully focused on the short-term goals ahead.”
Salah’s performance this season speaks volumes about his commitment. With 12 goals and 10 assists already, the 31-year-old continues to play a crucial role in Liverpool’s campaign. Slot expressed his desire for Salah to maintain these high standards.
“We absolutely need Mo to keep delivering those numbers,” Slot stated. “That’s what makes him such an exceptional player—he consistently produces at this level. From what I’ve seen, there’s no indication that he’s looking elsewhere. He’s as locked in as ever.”
Robertson Backs Salah’s Professionalism
Liverpool defender Andy Robertson echoed Slot’s sentiments, dismissing any suggestion that Salah’s comments have caused unrest in the dressing room.
“As players, it’s not something we can get involved in,” Robertson said. “What I can say is Mo is the ultimate professional. Every day in training, he’s focused and giving his all. That’s true not just for Mo but also for Virgil [van Dijk] and Trent [Alexander-Arnold], who are in similar contract situations. All three of them have been fantastic leaders this season.”
When asked if Salah seemed unhappy, Robertson was quick to refute the idea. “Mo doesn’t look sad to me. He’s one of the happiest people at the training ground. He shows up with a smile, works hard in the gym, and pushes himself on the pitch. He’s the kind of person who stays focused on what matters most—preparing for the next game. Right now, I’m sure he’s at home, thinking about Real Madrid tomorrow night.
“That’s what makes great players stand out. They don’t let distractions get to them, and Mo certainly belongs among the best in the world.”
As Liverpool heads into a decisive week, both Slot and Robertson remain confident in Salah’s ability to rise to the occasion, regardless of the ongoing speculation surrounding his future.
