Arne Slot has tempered expectations for any last-minute signings before the transfer window closes, though the Liverpool head coach hasn’t completely ruled out the possibility.
As the deadline day looms, the Reds have already secured two signings: goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will remain on loan at Valencia, and forward Federico Chiesa. Despite these additions, many believe that Liverpool still needs reinforcements, particularly in the No. 6 position, which remains a priority area yet to be fully addressed.
In his press conference on Friday, ahead of the clash with Manchester United, Slot addressed the situation by stating, “I’m not expecting anything, but that’s been the case throughout the entire window.” He emphasized that while they are not actively anticipating new arrivals, the club is prepared to act swiftly if an opportunity presents itself.
This cautious optimism hints that Liverpool’s recruitment team is still on the lookout for potential signings, even in the final hours of the window. Rumours circulated late Thursday night about interest in Porto’s defensive midfielder Alan Varela, but these were quickly dismissed by sources close to the club.
Slot’s remarks suggest that much of the activity on deadline day could revolve around player departures. Several players, including Nat Phillips, Marcelo Pitaluga, Ben Doak, and Kaide Gordon, are likely candidates for either permanent moves or loan deals.
Slot also addressed the possibility of these outgoings, saying, “If the right opportunity arises for both the player and the club, we will make a move.” However, he was clear that his primary focus remains on the upcoming match against Manchester United rather than on any potential transfers.
While it seems unlikely that Liverpool will make any more signings, the door isn’t entirely closed, and fans can still hold out hope for a surprise addition before the deadline passes.
