Steven Gerrard has expressed his strong support for Mohamed Salah to continue breaking records at Liverpool, voicing his hope that the Egyptian forward remains at the club beyond next summer.
Salah’s current contract is set to expire at the end of this season, but Gerrard is optimistic that the Liverpool star will stay longer and continue his remarkable goal-scoring run.
Salah currently ranks fifth on Liverpool’s all-time top scorers list with 218 goals, just ten shy of overtaking Billy Liddell for fourth place. The Egyptian forward has already widened the gap between himself and Gerrard, who is now 32 goals behind him on the club’s leaderboard. Salah’s incredible form and hunger for success make him a constant threat to set new records, both at the club and within the Premier League.
Speaking on The Redmen TV’s live charity stream on Wednesday, Gerrard, the former Liverpool captain, praised Salah’s relentless dedication to the game, describing him as “obsessed” with becoming the best. “He’s obsessed with the game,” Gerrard said. “You can see it in his body shape, his routine, and how he goes about his life. I follow his social media and talk to a lot of people about him.”
Gerrard shared that he often speaks to Liverpool’s goalkeeping coach, John Achterberg, about Salah’s work ethic. “John says Salah is obsessed with being the best, and he wants to break every record and be remembered as one of the greatest.” According to Gerrard, Salah’s passion for the game and his dedication to staying at the top of his profession are what make him such a special player.
The former Liverpool star also pointed out that while fans may not fully appreciate Salah’s greatness until after he eventually leaves, his contributions to the club and the sport will leave a lasting legacy. Gerrard emphasized his hope that Salah continues playing for Liverpool for at least a couple more years. “I think he can deliver at a high level for many more years because of how he looks after himself and his professionalism. I hope we get to see more of him at Liverpool.”
Even as Salah approaches his 33rd birthday next summer, his influence on the pitch remains undeniable. He has already registered seven goals and six assists this season, showcasing his continued importance to the team. However, Gerrard noted that Salah’s impact isn’t just about what he does on the field; his dedication to fitness and self-improvement serves as a model for younger players at the club.
“The ones who are obsessed with their profession and have that level of talent, like Mo, will always show consistency,” Gerrard remarked. He highlighted how Liverpool’s younger players, such as Curtis Jones, can learn from Salah’s example and similarly shape their careers. Salah’s consistent performance levels and his commitment to maintaining peak physical condition make him a role model within the squad.
Though Gerrard is now managing Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, his heart remains with Liverpool, and he humorously admitted that he still schedules his team’s training sessions around the Reds’ matches. “Both myself and John keep an eye on Liverpool’s fixtures. We’ve been training at nine or ten at night because of it, and the players are onto me about it now!”
Gerrard, along with several other Liverpool celebrities, participated in The Redmen TV’s charity stream, which raised funds for Zoe’s Place, a children’s charity. His admiration for Salah and his deep connection to Liverpool remain strong, as he continues to cheer on his former team from the sidelines, hoping for more years of brilliance from Salah in a Liverpool shirt.
Gerrard’s sentiments reflect the shared hopes of many Liverpool fans—that Salah will extend his stay at the club, continue breaking records, and leave a lasting legacy as one of Liverpool’s greatest-ever players.
